DIY Cabinet No2

Page [1] [2] [3]

9th February 2010

With the doors now finished its time to fit them. They are fixed to the hinges and as expected there is a little rubbing. Therefore out comes the sandpaper and the areas which are rubbing are removed. The veneer is only 0.6mm thick so there is not much to play with here.

Some final touches are that I rub some moreof the lightly stained filler down the joins of the doors veneer This can be clearly seen in picture 3.

Then a lock is added. I have used this cupboard lock on all 3 of the cabinets this tank has stood on. Only the left hand door needs a lock as the right hand door is fixed shut with a bolt inside. Vital that the unit is secure as I have 2 very young children in the house and don't want anything fiddled with or more importantly I don't want any dangerous substances being eaten/drunk!!!

The final touch is to add some T-bar handles matching the bookcase on the right hand side of the chimney breast.

The tank is returned to the top of the unit and we are finished all bar the shouting. I have to finish the unit now and will be using Tung oil. This will be wiped on all over the veneer, left for half hour, then the excess wiped off and left to dry for a day. This is repeated 3 more times (4 coats) and after the fourth coat it is left for four days to go hard. You can see the difference between the raw white ash on the first 2 pics and the finished unit in the fourth picture. The handles and lock are removed in the fourth picture during the oiling process.

The cabinet is now virtually finished. As you can see below the T-bar handles have been added and if you look closely you can see that I lowered the lock and had to put a 'patch' where it had been. It is noticeable under close scrutiny as you can see from the close up picture but from further away it isn't.

The second picture shows how it now matches the bookcase on the right. All I have left to do to it now is to spray the hinges and the screw on the lock plate silver to match the rest of the 'metalwork' on the 2 units.

The final thing I have left to do is to veneer the main luminaire and the shelf above the main tank so that everything matches.
