DIY wall supported cabinet
This cabinet won't be practical to all and some may not even like it but it will just show how simple and easy it is to make an inexpensive cabinet while making it look quite the opposite.
The cabinet that the tank had been sitting on was just a basic pine living room cabinet that I bought off ebay for £45 delivered in March 2007. whilst still being practical it didn't fit into the decor of this house which I moved into in December 2007.
The plan was to make a cabinet that fits completely into the alcove with no gaps at the sides or floor and be flush to the chimeny breast at the front. Then to use Fablon Vinyl to change the colour to match the decor of the room and the walnut laminate flooring.
While thinking about changing the cabinet I noticed my neighbour had piled up a load of wood at the side of her house. It was a large 'entertainment unit' which she had broken down and was planning on taking to the local tip.
I asked if I could have it and she agreed so I set about 'rebuilding it to see what it was like before drawing up a plan. It was plain chipboard with an mdf top finished in a light oak laminate. Most of the screw mountings and fixings were damaged and there were holes in the chipboard where they had been fitted so I had to move all the fixing points to undamaged areas.
The picture below shows the unit as it stood with no alterations apart from moving the fixing points.
