Jiggy the greyhound

10th November 2009

My wife and I had discussed having a dog for a long long time. I had been the reluctant one because although I had always been brought up with a dog in the family and love dogs to bits I am allergic to the extreme, suffering with puffy eyes, sneezes etc.

However last week I came across an advert where someone was giving away a greyhound 'free to a good home'. The advert said he was 8 months old and that he had to go due to a lack of space. The owners had been sold him as a 'dwarf greyhound' and as he had grown they had discovered that he was no dwarf anything.

I have no idea why I gave it a second glance due to my allergy to dogs but for some reason I started researching as I do with anything I get interested in. A fair few articles saying that due to their short hair many allergy sufferers aren't affected and I decided that maybe we could have a dog. A lot more research went on now to see how greyhounds are with young children, foods to feed them etc.

To cut a long story short I asked my wife what she thought. The answer was neither negative nor positive and a day later we drove 30 miles and collected him.

At 8 months old he is a giant. We could already tell that even by greyhound sizes he was going to be a biggie.

His original name was Jigsaw but the previous owners had shortened it to Jiggy and we decided we were happy enough with the name so we went with it.
After an hour or 2 of him being in our household it seems the research was right. My eyes and nose are unaffected and therefore I can say that he will be here to stay.

He is great with the kids apart from some gentle play biting and the only negative thing is that the garden I have been doing a progress journal on has been turned into a mud figure of 8. However that is something to remedy over time.

I am looking into getting Jiggy castrated now. He is 19 months old. Yesterday at the park Jiggy was not as per normal. Even though on his lead he used to be very friendly with other dogs. Nose to nose and nose to bum etc. but yesterday we were talking to some other dog owners and there were 2 females and a young male (not greyhounds) and he was quite aggressive. Strangely not towards the young male but towards the 2 females!!

Jiggy is now much bigger than other greyhounds I see, although he only weighs 25kg.

The children in the pictures below are 4 and 5 and are best mates with Jiggy and he loves them too.
