DIY veneered bookcase

Page [1] [2]

18th November 2009

A month on from the first post and the unit has been veneered inside each section, on the sides, top, inside the legs and finally the frontage. The first picture below shows this and I hope you agree with me it looks superb.

At this point I have another 8 day period where I rub Tung Oil on the unit. wipe off the excess after 30 minutes and leave for a day, I repeat 3 times more (4 coats) and leave the final coat to set hard for 4 days. I will then put the unit in its final position and finish it off in position.

The second picture is one of the doors I have cut. These are just chipboard panels which used to bepart of my old fishtank cabinet. The veneer is underneath and will be left for 24 hours for the glue to dry.

The doors complete I hang them in their positions. The unit is already in use with just the finishing touches to be done. If you look carefully you can see the difference in colour between the oil finished unit and the unfinshed doors.

All I have left to do now is to put some T-bar handles on the doors and put some magnetic catches to hold the doors closed.

The bookcase is now completed and as you can see the doors now have their handles. They have also been finished with Tung Oil so that they match the unit.

You can also see in this picture that the bookcase and the cabinet are now a matching set.

To complete the look I now just have to veneer the main luminaire and the shelf above it.
