Outdoor dining area
2nd June 2010
Another project along the lines of others. This time an 'outdoor dining area'.
Of course as with all my projects the budget is minimal and therefore I shall be trying to get this job completed for less than £300. That would be reasonably easy to do except for 2 things:
1 - I hate the 'bobble' surface of cheaper paving slabs
2 - The are I am paving is much bigger than an average 'patio'.
The area in question is actually 6 metres by 3.6 metres. With that in mind I drew up a basic plan and off I went sourcing the required materials.
I eventually
got everything from Wickes:
42 x grey riven concrete 600 x 600 slabs
75 x black block paving.
50 x 25kg Sharp Sand.
9 x 25kg Cement.
The table and chairs had been bought previously.
I managed to get Wickes to deliver the lot for £290 inc delivery and so we waited for the day to come.

The actual plan is pretty simple. there is a 1 metre concrete 'path all around the house which will remain. then there is an 80cm concrete path leading from the house up the garden. this will be removed at the point where it joins the path around the house. Another section of concrete is to the left looking at the plan where the drain cover is. this will also remain.
The shed will remain in situ and then I shall
pave according to the plan, followed by a block paving border.
I had already dug out the area to around 6 inches. Quite deep because this area is prone to flooding and it is also a high clay content.
First days progress was quite slow while I got my bearings. I laid 17 of the paving slabs on a 4" or so bed of mortar. The dog seemed pretty happy with this new area.
I have intentionally made sure that the patio slopes away from the house gently to the centre and then rises again to meet the garde. This means that water drains to the centre and then channels into the garden edge through some gaps that I have left in the block paving.
